Hey That’s Todally Swede

roundabout dog

I came across this Swedish guy’s blog. I’m mentioning this for three reasons:

  1. I love the site’s layout; and he links to a few cool things:
  2. Roundabout Dogs
  3. Stupid Cats (mainly for Bowman but if you like it then good for you. I love the condescending note the phrase “good for you” has)
  4. He had this quote: “Norway outlaws the iTunes Store. Its apparent that Apple will have to Sweden the deal.”

Plus there was a link to a page that linked to a talk by Adam Bosworth that goes into ajax, databases, Google, information organisation and more nerdy cool stuff that you would like if you were as nerdy as me. Adam Bosworth is a mySQL guy who now works for Google by the way, and the talk is from April 2005 but it’s still a feast of info.

Our IT Department’s Christmas Party was at Friday’s nightclub in
Brisbane. It’s all fun and games until somebody loses their
wallet/phone/dignity.

Wisdom of the crowd for weight loss

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

At Chermside shopping centre north of Brisbane yesterday (Sunday), which has recently been expanded with a bunch of new shops and food places, including a dreamy donuts. Dreamy is about 90% as good as krispy kreme donuts but just dont quite have that super light “you’re eating a thousand empty calories” fluffiness about them. Anyway, this crowd of people prevented me expanding my bloated waistline any further, so for that i thank them. I wish i could scrounge together a few million bucks for a franchise of my own, donuts sell like crazy!

Rampant Consumerism

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Speaking of photos taken with camera phones (see my office) I bought a new phone on ebay. It’s a Sony Ericsson W810i, which is a Walkman-branded phone that plays MP3s from up to 4GB of Memory Stick Duo memory. It has a 2MP camera, which ties it into this post :)

As I’ve started getting to and from work on a 30 to 45 minute bus ride, I was getting drawn into the iPod hype. Then I realised that I need a new phone anyway, and spending between $200 and $400 on an iPod Nano is ridiculous when it’s something else to carry as well as being extra cost and locking me into using bloody iTunes. Plus the W810i is smaller than my T630.

So remain perched on the edge of your seat for updates and photos from the fiery two megapixel MP3 player of telephones.

If you’re looking for info about mobile phones, including honest opinions as well as raw technical specs and pictures of a phone from every angle including the guts of all its menus and more than you probably want to know, mobile-review.com is awesome. It’s a Russian site, but the people who run it are insane and they know everything about phones. Plus, the Russian engrish is hilarious sometimes. The comparisons of the T630 and T610 are a good example; they refer to the feel of buttons, menus, camera resolution etc in the context of the previous model.

The easiest way to find a review of the phone you’re looking for on that site is to use our good mate, Google. Type in something like

t630 site:mobile-review.com

and the first result you get will normally be the phone you’re looking for. Here are some to try, including the crazy-ass ridiculous Nokia N95, that does full DVD-quality video, as well as a 5MP still camera and a Carl Zeiss lens. Nutso. Or the amazing Nokia 1610, which supports receiving SMS only, has 5 ringing tones and a 16-symbol display!

Sushi, Sapporo and Sake…and Deep Fried Chicken

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

This post was meant to be from my mobile phone last night when we were at Hanaichi, but Postie rejected the sending address.

Why do people drink sake? I don’t think it’s very nice…the beer on the other hand was great. So was the fried chicken and the wagyu beef sushi is so good.

I love going to the Hanaichi restaurant in Brisbane city; and as they say on the site linked to above:

Don’t be put off by the shopping centre location, this stylish sushi train is worth catching. With Tokyo-chic styling and seperate tables for a la carte diners it’s a great, central spot for fine Japanese fare.

Totally.

P.S. my phone’s camera is on the VGA setting but it’s so lame that it’s only the 352×288 CIF resolution scaled up. That’s why it looks rubbish. I so need a better phone. Yes, need.

I hate this feature so much

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

Let’s see if I can blog this by email before my computer restarts automatically.

After you install some Windows Updates, Windows earnestly insists that you have to restart your computer as a matter of urgency. Apparently urgently enough to popup a dialog box that takes the focus from any other windows you may have open and sets the default focus to “Restart Now” so that if you press Enter (like say, if you’re typing and the dialog pops up and you press Enter for a new line), your computer restarts.

30sec left.

So yeah I could press Restart Later now, but then this would just annoy me some other time.

Edit:

In all the excitement (the floor in our office was being vacuumed and I had to move my chair with only 1 minute to go!) I forgot to attach the screenshot:

Dog tube

Certain elements of this blog’s readership have commented that Chloe doesn’t appear to be obese as I claim. To better demonstrate her tubularity I give you this photo. You be the judge! ;)

Bundaberg - dogs, kites and dragons

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

On Saturday we went to Moore Park just north of Bundaberg, where there was a shindig with the sandology.com guy building this sand dragon, and tons of kites like this dinosaur…and Subaru-engined gyrocopters.

This dog is called Chloe, her obesity amuses me.
