It’s been almost a week since I updated. So sad.

It’s mainly because there’s been no point: the box this blog gets published to has had a shocker of a week. First things went bad because of hard disk I/O problems. Turned out to be the controller, though, not the disks themselves. So now the disks are running off another mainboard, with an upgraded (now an insane 150MHz) CPU, more RAM (yes, 64MB) and a bigger secondary hard disk (now 2×4GB drives). As you would guess, the performance is (not) astonishing.

I’m sure there was other interesting news, but I can’t think of any. For burnouts you can visit thrashcar.com. Just added pictures of a HZ panelvan doing a burnout. It’s a good skid, too.

Drove a Monaro CV8 today. It was nice - six-speed manual, 5.7GenIII V8, 18″ wheels. My Dad came with me to make sure I didn’t do any burnouts in it, I think. It was heaps of fun to drive, though. I really wish I could have had more of an opportunity to try it out, basically all I got to experience was the straight-line acceleration (which was very good, thankyou). The exhaust note was really nice, fairly loud for a standard car, with that V8 rumble.
Oh listen to me wax lyrical about this car; it was only yesterday I was lamenting the number of people driving these barges with enormous engines…

So anyway my drive was cut short because our network at work went spastic because of a SQL Server 2000 vulnerability that causes it to DDoS. Three of the SQL Servers on our LAN were trying to send out around 150Mb/sec, and the router wasn’t happy. Quentin had to come in and help, because I was drowning.

And in other news, the exhaust on my offroading Charade has been on its way out since I’ve had it. Today it finally decided enough was enough. Now my car sounds like a tractor, which was lots of fun on the freeway when I was in a rush; going back to third gear next to other drivers got their attention! Some didn’t take things too well and just got angry at me; I really didn’t care.

Anyway, I’m off to probably the best nightclub in Brisbane.

i got a wiki!

i tried a few, buggerised around with them but they were a hassle to get working. I ended up using awki-awki, written by Oliver Tonnhofer. What’s a wiki?
The one I’m using is written entirely in awk, is extremely simple to setup and uses only 300 or so lines of code, apparently. I could check but I can’t be bothered right now.

Anyway, I’m sure I’ll find some use for this wiki thing, don’t know what it will be yet.

Bored? You can find some things to do when you’re bored at bored.com.au.

I just walked down to Hungry Jack’s (that’s Australian for Burger King), and on the way I had to walk through KFC’s carpark and drive through. Saw a new XR6 Turbo waiting to order in the drive thru. Wife and kid in the car - lucky she’s got that much power, really; 240kW of turbo six cylinder in a rear-drive chassis is fantastic for drivers who couldn’t care less about vehicle dynamics and driving technique. Especially in the wet.

Anyway, my point was that the same car drove from the KFC drive through into the Hungry Jack’s one. The two restaurants are not thirty metres apart, but they couldn’t get out of the car to go and buy the food. I know I have done the same. No wonder we’re having oil wars, wars to get access to oil and wars around oil pipelines. Let alone that obesity is such a problem - the USA leads but Australia sure isn’t far behind.

I admit I was buying Hungry Jack’s myself; but at least I didn’t drive there in my high performance big capacity engined generously family-sized automobile. I don’t own one of those, but that’s only due to financial constraints, I’m certain that before now I would have owned a car like that if it didn’t send me broke. I’m starting to change my opinions, though.

I haven’t updated this blog for ages. Last time I did, I was only trying it out to see what this thing’s all about. Since then, blogs have gone nuts!

So I’m doing this because I need a place to vent. I need to say “World! Take heed of my frustrations!”. I’m working at this place hacking at a piece of crap web application that could be touted as a dynamic, growing work; or it could be derided for what it really is, and that is a poorly designed, completely un-specced piece of junk that users can simply phone up or email in new additions and ‘improvements’. Which they do, every single day. So the database gets little changes made here and there, the ASP is tweaked in a few places and every now and then something breaks and you can’t explain why. Especially to lusers.
